Rabbit green
Thursday evening from the Tongariro Lower Bridge Pool, and she will be eaten by Turangi residents. I fished briefly Wednesday evening and missed at least 1 bite on the same Rabbit, and will keep trying for another rainbow.

Brown trout Tuesday

|
comments
: The hen brown trout shown in the photograph above was hooked on a size 8
Rabbit green
Tuesday evening from the Tongariro Lower Bridge Pool. She was a decent quality brown trout, and she will be eaten by deserving Turangi residents. I hadn't fished since I caught and cooked a good quality rainbow last week, but I have biked and hiked downstream a couple of times since, to find 0 anglers fishing in recently re-arranged river areas.

Rabbit lightolive&red
Thursday evening from lower Tongariro River water. I bicycled down wearing waders and fished the Smallman's Reach bitelessly for 20 minutes, lost patience, rode back toward the Hirangi Stream and, without wading, hooked this fish in water between mid-stream tree fragments. Many more tree fragments on the left bank precluded easy landing, and I thought the fish was gone at least twice when the line wrapped around branches, but I felt lucky at that point that I hadn't fallen into the river. Even in moonlight, caution was needed riding home, because many tree stumps chopped just above ground level aren't obvious, are well-camouflaged, and seem hazardous to bike tyres. Motorbikes and horses also could be at risk from those road hazards.

: Turangi angler Kirk told me this afternoon he'd kept one decent rainbow nymph fishing briefly this afternoon in the Lower Bridge Pool, where no other anglers seen. I put on waders, hiked over after sunset, and found one other angler wetlining opposite the Herekiekie Street Rockpile. I fished behind him for ~15 minutes, for no bites, and he told me he'd also had no bites. Tuesday evening, I biked downstream, wearing waders, had no bites in likely looking water, until I snagged and lost my leader. Some horse footprints could be seen in the trail, and some anglers may be riding horses, or motorbikes, to travel further downstream. Two anglers wetlined the Log Pool, which certainly looked underpowered, with half volume, or less, and it looked almost as if they were fishing in a pond.

: A Turangi angler told me Wednesday that he's been catching limits of decent rainbows by motorbiking to Tongariro River reaches several kilometres downstream from the areas cleared of trees within the past year. A motorbike, or possibly a horse, could be the best option for water downstream from the Bridge, now that the treeless areas may contain fewer fish, and fewer anglers. I wetlined the Parade Pool early Wednesday morning, and may have missed a bite, and also may have missed a bite Thursday evening near the Highway One Bridge. Another local angler had been wetlining when I arrived, and he told me he'd missed one bite.
